Chihuly in Columbus is a Columbus, Ohio city-wide celebration of the brilliant art forms of Dale Chihuly. This event features three spectacular Chihuly exhibitions from the summer of 2009 through spring of 2010. Franklin Park Conservatory kicks off Dale Chihuly’s visually dynamic shows this summer followed by two spectacular exhibitions this fall at The Columbus Museum of Art and Hawk Galleries.
Chihuly Reimagined
July 4, 2009 - March 28, 2010
An exhibition of Dale Chihuly's glass artwork at Franklin Park Conservatory in 2003 and 2004 drew a record number of visitors and made a lasting impression on all who viewed it. Installations of Chihuly's vibrant work were placed throughout the Conservatory, among the plant collections. In the summer of 2004, The Friends of the Conservatory - a private, nonprofit group - purchased most of the pieces included in that exhibition for Franklin Park Conservatory. It is the largest collection owned by a conservatory or botanical garden. Several pieces are currently on view at Franklin Park Conservatory.
The full collection will be on view once again beginning July 4, 2009, along with new work by this world-renowned artist in an exhibition titled Chihuly Reimagined. From August 15 through January 3, a working hot shop will give visitors an up close opportunity to see glass being made. This exhibition is an anchor for a Columbus-wide celebration, Chihuly in Columbus, which includes an exhibition at the Columbus Museum of Art, Chihuly Illuminated, opening on September 25, 2009.
Chihuly Resource Center
In the fall of 2006, The John F. Wolfe Chihuly Resource Center was established at the Conservatory. The resource center houses books, DVDs about the artist, original glass artworks and drawings by Chihuly, and teacher resources.
Chihuly Illuminated
September 25, 2009 - Spring 2010
This survey exhibition comprises sculpture, installations, and two-dimensional work from the early 1970s to the present. This Columbus Museum of Art exhibition coincides with the reinstallation of Chihuly's work at the Franklin Park Conservatory.
Chihuly XIV
October 2, 2009 - January 31, 2010
Dale Chihuly will be mounting his fourteenth solo exhibition in Columbus with Tom Hawk, Director of Hawk Galleries, titled Chihuly XIV, featuring the “Picasso of glass’” most recent sculpture. Hawk Galleries feels privileged to showcase the artists’ masterful works, which are currently featured in the permanent collections of nearly 200 museums worldwide.
A couple of featured pieces at Hawk will be Chihuly’s last Waterford crystal Chandelier and another visually dynamic and very rare Persian Chandelier (see above), created with vividly-colored, blown glass “spinners,” similar in form to his installation at Bellagio in Las Vegas. Chihuly has recently been exploring a variety of works in black glass, and so the artist will be featuring a Black Sconce, Black Macchia, and Black Venetians. Chihuly’s Hawk exhibition will also feature Sealife Stoppers, a Persian Wall Installation and a Drawing Wall composed of twenty individual paintings. Rounding out the show, Hawk will feature Chihuly’s Studio Editions and prints. To view more Chihuly sculptures and drawings go to hawkgalleries.com.
Hawk has also guided numerous families and businesses in commissioning unique works by the Louvre-caliber artist, where the journey is a gratifying part of the final sculpture. Chihuly is particularly adept at designing works that compliment homes and businesses both indoors and out, as he studied interior design and architecture early in his career.
